The children of Naval War Heroes were awarded with scholarships during a ceremony held at the Admiral Somathilake Dissanayake Auditorium, SLNS Parakrama today (16). Some of these Naval War Heroes had sacrificed their lives on the battle field and others were disabled during war. The ceremony was organized following a concept of the President of the Navy Seva Vanitha Unit (NSVU), Mrs. Yamuna Wijegunaratne.
The Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne graced this occasion as the Chief Guest. The other notable guests who attended this event were, Mrs. Lakshmi Pallegama the President of the Civil Defence Force - Seva Vanitha Unit, Ms. Jeewanthi Senanayake the Executive Secretary of Seva Vanitha Unit of the Ministry of Defence, Director Naval Dental Service, Rear Admiral Douglas Perera, senior officers, members of NSVU, members of Officers’ Children’s Club, officers from NSVU and a host of naval personnel.
The Chief Guest of the event, the Commander of the Navy, together with several other distinguished guests lit the traditional oil lamp. Subsequently 34 children of Naval War Heroes were presented with their scholarships by Vice Admiral Wijegunaratne in company with the President of NSVU and other invited guests. Adding more glamour to the event, the members of Officers’ Children’s Club presented a couple of vivid performances as well.
In parallel with this event, going by yet another concept of the President of NSVU, a new insurance scheme was also introduced for the Officers’ Children’s Club. Accordingly, the members were presented their certificates of insurance on this occasion. In similar vein, the members of Officers’ Children’s Club also received sport wear which are necessary for their sport engagements.
Speaking on the occasion, the Commander of the Navy commented on the distribution of scholarships among needy children and highlighted the importance of the same initiative. Subsequently, a father of a child, among the crowds, extended his deep sense of appreciation to the President of NSVU and all naval personnel for all the donations made and over this magnanimous cause.
Thereafter, a special memento was presented to the Commander of the Navy for his gracious presence on this occasion. Besides, the spouses of war heroes were also recognized, awarding special prizes by the NSVU.
